When many of us try to lose weight or get more toned, we tend to think that eating clean is the only way to go. We’ve been taught that fats and carbs are the bad guys, and we should avoid them at all costs. Fact is – fats help to satiate you and carbs give you fuel. While eating clean definitely has its place, it’s not the end all be all.
Many diets or nutrition plans involve cutting out foods that we like. My question to you is – is that a sustainable way of eating? More specifically, can you see yourself eating that way for the rest of your life? If that question scares you a bit, you probably don’t see yourself eating chicken breasts and salads every day for the rest of your life. No one wants to eat like that forever; it’s just no fun.
In my opinion, there’s no such thing as unhealthy food. Burgers aren’t unhealthy, fried chicken isn’t unhealthy, fruit isn’t fattening, and donuts aren’t bad for you. The problem is when your lifestyle consists of having these foods too frequently. If you eat burgers and fried chicken every day, then of course you’re going to gain weight and potentially have health issues. On the other hand, it’s not a problem if you have foods like this every now and then. We’ve been told to avoid foods that we like if we want to be fit and healthy. Unfortunately, we’ve been misled.
So how do we address the issues? How do we get fit and still live a life in which we can enjoy food? My solution is to diet without dieting. Simply put, you’ve got to change your lifestyle. Best way to do this is to start counting your calories. Measuring your caloric intake makes you more accountable and puts you in control of your own fitness. It also makes you feel less guilty when you have food that you enjoy because you still end up hitting your caloric goal.
Don’t be fooled into thinking that you have to adopt certain diets to lose weight. The key is to not diet at all – hence the phrase “diet without dieting.” Because what happens when you go on a diet? You lose the weight and then you eventually gain it back because you can’t stay on that diet forever. Let’s get you to a point where you feel comfortable at the beach again. Summer is right around the corner.
