On the 29th, the first U.S. tour of 1971 begins at Forest Hills Tennis Stadium in New York. It rains so hard that The Who have to perform with rubber mats on their shoes to stave off electrocution. The show kicks off with “Love Ain’t For Keeping” and includes other new songs, “Pure and Easy,” “My Wife,” “Bargain,” “Behind Blue Eyes,” and “Won’t Get Fooled Again.” Not only does Pete smash two guitars, but John also smashes his Gibson Thunderbird bass. The opening act is Labelle.
